Dear Colleagues,
We welcome you to the IPA Asian Psychoanalytic Centenary Congress: “Freud in Asia, Evolution and Change: Psychoanalysis in the Asian Context” in Beijing! This Congress brings to realization over three decades of creative collaboration between those in Asia, Europe and the Americas who are dedicated, in its centenary year, to developing psychoanalysis as an international cross-cultural work in progress. With this Congress the dialogue between analysts of the East and West moves to a new level of achievement. Prominent researchers from different fields, regions, and schools of psychoanalysis and scholars from the humanistic and social sciences will share their expertise and comparative perspectives on mind, body, spiritual and emotional generativity, healing and inner harmony.
Asia has many ancient and venerable cultural heritages of mental health, mind-body interaction, interpersonal relations, and introspective insight, from traditional medicine to yoga, deeply rooted in the historic experience of each culture. A dialogue with colleagues from other cultures and social systems demands that we reflect on and work with our own subjectivity — which is the essence of the psychoanalytic method.
Prof. Yang Yunping and Maria Teresa Hooke and their hard working Planning, Scientific, and Advisory Committees, have put together a rich psychoanalytic clinical, theoretical, and cultural program of East-West interactive panels, workshops, and symposia to welcome your participation. On behalf of the congress team I wish you excitement and pleasure in the discovery of new ideas, therapeutic approaches, and insights for your life and work.
Prof. Dr. Peter Loewenberg
Chair, IPA China Committee
