Founded in 1967 as the Brazilian Association of Psychoanalysis (BPA), it was initially directed by Dr. Mário Martins and Roberto Pinto Ribeiro, Porto Alegre. The first Board was elected in 1969 and as president Dr. Durval Marcondes, Sao Paulo.
Since then, every two years new directors have been elected Councils and ABP was gradually consolidating its position as a federal entity with the Brazilian Societies and subsequently also the gathering Study Groups that were formed with the official recognition of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA).
