The Rio de Janeiro Psychoanalytic Society (SPRJ Rio I) was formed as an Institute in 1948 with the assistance and recommendation of Doctor Ernest Jones, who was the president of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA), and on the arrival of two European analysts (Doctor Burke and Doctor Walter Werner Kemper) to start the training of psychoanalysts in Rio de Janeiro.
In 1950, Doctor Kemper and his group of analysts separated from the Institute and founded the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies in Rio de Janeiro. In 1953, the Center was recognised by the IPA as a Study Group and in 1955, recognised as a Component Society.
SPRJ Rio I was officially founded on September 29 1955 as the Psychoanalytic Society of Rio de Janeiro, the second organisation to be recognised by the IPA in Brazil (the first had been the Brazilian Psychoanalytic Society of São Paulo).
SPRJ Rio I has contributed to the development, scientific study and dissemination of psychoanalysis in Brazil and Latin America, through conferences, symposia, scientific meetings, production work, participation in the creation of new companies such as Psychoanalytic Porto Alegre and Recife, and through the creation of new groups such as the study groups of Mato Grosso do Sul and new nuclei, such as Belo Horizonte.
