The IPA is the world’s primary accrediting and regulatory body for psychoanalysis. Our mission is to assure the continued vigour and development of psychoanalysis for the benefit of psychoanalytic patients. We work in partnership with our 70 constituent organizations in 33 countries to support our 11,500 Members.

Our aims include creating new psychoanalytic groups, stimulating debate, conducting research, developing training policies and establishing links with other bodies. We organize a large biennial Congress which is open to all.  This is the IPA's only official website.

Swine influenza

We are sure all members will now be aware of swine influenza. The situation is changing rapidly and we recommend that anyone with any travel concerns checks the latest advice from the World Health Organisation  by clicking on this link http://www.who.int/en/

Many countries will also have their own information sites in local languages to which you may wish to refer.

At the time of writing (29/4/2009) WHO advice is ‘not to close borders and not to restrict international travel. It was considered prudent for people who are ill to delay international travel and for people developing symptoms following international travel to seek medical attention.’

The IPA will closely monitor the situation and will update this information in line with any changes in official advice.

In regard to clinical approaches it presents the relationship between the "splitting" and complex clinical cases such as borderline, perverse and psychosomatic conditions....read more

The Work of Confluence: Listening and Interpreting in the Psychoanalytic Field

By Madeleine and Willy Baranger
Edited by Leticia Glocer Fiorini

'Willy and Madeleine Baranger, analysts of French origin, who trained in Argentina, and who had a decisive role in the development of Uruguayan psychoanalysis, are two of the most creative and stimulating authors in Latin American psychoanalysis. Among their many contributions, I would like to mention two main concepts that can shed light on the therapeutic action of psychoanalysis. Their concepts of the dynamic field and unconscious fantasy represent the convergence of various contemporary schools of thought....read more

On Freud's The Future of an Illusion

On Freud's
'The Future of an Illusion'

Edited by Mary Kay O'Neil and Salman Akhtar

"The Future of an Illusion" reveals Freud's reflections about religion as well as his hope that in the future science will go beyond religion, and reason will replace faith in God. The discussion with an imaginary critic revealed his internal debate, mirroring the debate about this subject in the outside world. However, it also enlightens his way of thinking, deconstructing and constructing at the same time. This volume considers Freudian ideas and their implications today, ....read more
